Congratulations to Dan on getting a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship

Dan Edwards, a postdoctoral research associate in the group, has been awarded a prestigious early postdoctoral fellowship from the Chief Scientist Office (CSO), part of the Scottish Government Health Directorate. Dan did his PhD with Prof. Scott Cockroft and Dr Amanda Jarvis, and joined the ESMB group as part of a Leverhulme-funded project between Prof. Scott Cockroft and Prof. Mathew Horrocks. Dan has previously won the Institute for Regeneration and Repair's Innovator 2026 competition, and runs an outreach science activity funded by AIBIO-UK. He's also on the School's Post-Doc Committee. 

 Dan will begin the three-year fellowship this year with a project focused on advancing Parkinson's disease diagnosis through biomarkers that enable early detection from accessible biofluids. 

On the award, Dan said: "It is an honour to be awarded the CSO early postdoctoral fellowship. This award will give me the time and resources to develop assays to improve our approaches to the challenge of diagnostics in Parkinson's disease using a single-molecule methods."

The fellowship demonstrates the commitment of the CSO to supporting translational research in fundamental chemistry, addressing key challenges in health, diagnostics, and the ageing population. Dan's ambitious project will draw on the lived experience of people with Parkinson's disease to help raise awareness of the underrepresented challenges facing the development of new diagnostics and technologies in the field.

 Dan added: "Through this project, I aspire to strengthen collaborations between the School of Chemistry and the Institute for Regeneration and Repair, and to showcase the impact of involving the public and individuals with lived experience at every stage of research."


Mathew said: "This is a very well-deserved fellowship, and is a fantastic opportunity for Dan to demonstrate how chemists can impact health sciences. I'm particularly excited about Dan's plans to include those affected by Parkinson's in the PPIE arm of his research, and look forward to seeing the exciting results."

Zoe wins a Sir William Darling Memorial Prize for enhancing the reputation of the University of Edinburgh

Huge congratulations to Zoe Gidden, who has been awarded a Sir William Darling Memorial Prize of £1000. Traditionally, this Prize is awarded to an individual or group of students who have done most to enhance the reputation of the University. Zoe has done this firstly through her role on the University swim team, which has resulted in her winning multiple events: Scottish National Masters Champion 2021 25-29 yrs in 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m individual medley. Achieving times that were faster than the Scottish age group record in the 50m and 100m freestyle. Scottish National Masters Champion 2022 25-29 yrs in 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley. Again, achieving times faster than the Scottish age group record in the 50m and 100m freestyle. Represented the University of Edinburgh in Scottish Student Sport League Division 1 matches. A new tool to detect and diagnose disease from blood samples

We have developed an innovative method to detect small biological particles in blood samples, opening up new possibilities for earlier and more accurate disease diagnosis.  The technique, which we refer to as VISTA (Vesicle Imaging by Single-molecule TCCD Analysis), allows scientists to characterise tiny particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are released by cells into the blood.  “This new tool is of huge potential, offering an easy way to obtain information from patient blood samples, without the need for invasive biopsies.” - Noelia.
